When makeup artist extraordinaire, Billy Brasfield, raves about a product, I sit up and take notice. He called out the awesomeness of Miracle Blur…and I subsequently bought it. He said that the new L’Oreal Butterfly Mascara was a game changer, so I waited the two months until my local CVS finally got it in stock to buy it. (I was seriously there weekly badgering them as to the exact date it would be in stock!) I’ve been wearing it for about a month now and here are my thoughts:
When you open the mascara tube, the first thing you notice before the wand is that it is scented. It immediately reminded me of Besame Cosmetics and the scent of their makeup. For some people, fragrance is an issue, more so if you have sensitive eyes. I personally don’t mind it, as I like perfumey things. But it is worthy of noting for those who may be unaware that there is fragrance.
The next thing you notice is that the wand is different than most. It has a curve to it, and the bristles have a V-like shape on one side and regular separating bristles on the other–creating a “cocoon” if you will.
The goal of this mascara is to give length, separate, “flutter out” your outer lashes and give volume. As you can see from the before and after photo, it did what it claims to with the exception of volume. Or at least my definition of volume (thicken lashes.) I did find the formula a little clumpy and would sometimes have to comb through with the wand several times to pull out the clumps or for my lashes to stop sticking together. And while the wand worked great in my right hand for my right eye, to get the same effect on the other eye would require my left hand (since I’d have to turn the wand around to get the flutter effect on my outer lashes.) Easier said than done and my left eye became tricky business.
I adore L’Oreal Voluminous because it adds volume to my lashes, and as you can see in the above picture, there wasn’t any type of thickening of my lashes, just length with Butterfly Mascara. I may try to use the wand with my usual L’Oreal Voluminous and see what happens. I do still like Butterfly Mascara, but I can’t say I was overly wowed by it.
